When can the Police seize your vehicle?
The Police can seize your vehicle if you are breaking the law
The police can seize your vehicle if they suspect that it is being used in a certain way that could cause alarm, harassment or distress. This could be a number of reasons such as careless or inconsiderate driving. Dangerous driving on the roads without proper due care or attention, drink driving, or using technology whilst driving and causing major risks to other road users and pedestrians. if you are caught doing any of these dangerous acts, the police can seize your car.
They can also seize a vehicle is they think its being driven by someone who doesn’t have a proper license. This could be a provisional or an invalid license. Typically the police will only suspect a driver not to have a license is if the quality of driving is lower than usual or if they are driving too carefully. If you are found without a license, the police can seize your car.
If a car has been obstructively parked or parked in a non-parking area, the police can seize your vehicle and place it in an impound. These areas are those that may cause danger to the public, such as blocking off roads, entrances or blocking other transport lines. The non-parking areas could be anywhere from roadsides, private property or parking illegally in car parks.
The police can also seize your car if it has been abandoned or broken down. This would normally not involve the driver but they may be contacted by the police to inform them that the police has seized your car with the possibility of a further fine.
